About
Christopher Wink is a multimedia freelance journalist in Philadelphia. I am also co-founder of TechnicallyPhilly.com, a news site covering technology and innovation in the Delaware Valley. Contact me here.
On this professional site, I blog about being a young freelance journalist in Philly – with central themes on pitching, writing, researching, networking and journalism 2.0. I am new and green and curious and learning. The ideas presented here are meant to be nothing more than that, the discoveries of a young and growing freelance journalist and small-time Web entrepreneur.
I started full-time freelancing in November after returning from more than a month backpacking Europe, travel blogging and podcasting at WeDontSpeaktheLanguage.com. I additionally edited video, took photographs and organized the site’s Web presence. After graduating from Temple University in May, I was named among the 100 top young journalists by UWire, a college news service.
I graduated May 22, 2008 with a political science degree from Temple University in Philadelphia.
The following summer I served a post-graduate internship with the Pennsylvania Legislative Correspondents’ Association – the oldest political journalism society in the country – covering state government in the Harrisburg, Pa. Capitol.
I have intense interest in government, urban politics, travel, and stories of community and humanity. My writing has appeared on Sports Illustrated.com, in the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Allentown Morning Call, and the Harrisburg Patriot News. I have additionally freelanced for Philadelphia Weekly, covered state government for the Pittsburgh Tribune Review, reported for the Philadelphia Business Journal and blogged for NBC Digital Studios.
I studied in West Africa, lived in Japan, and traveled through Eastern China and Western Europe, all on my own, with pen in hand and eyes wide open.
I grew up in northwest New Jersey, a rural community quickly incorporating an intensifying suburban expansion, protected by a kind family of warmth and privilege. My studies at Temple University brought me to Philadelphia, a big urban city with a complex of defeatism and ten million other reasons for the young and curious to devote themselves to it.
ChristopherWink.com launched on Dec. 3, 2007 more to leave a footprint in what is the always expanding Internet community than to serve an explicit purpose today. There is nothing I hope to avoid more than to fall into self-indulgent blog rhetoric or masturbatory online informality. This is merely a humble reservation with greater hopes in mind.
